Time For Hollywood To Expand Web Investment

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

The latest financial disclosures from News Corp. and Walt Disney Co. showed steady growth in the traditional media firms’ budding digital departments.

The bulk of their new media revenues, however, came from either a rare original enterprise (MySpace in News Corp.’s case) or the monetizing of traditional media content delivered in digital form. Here’s the catch: with the exception of clips from YouTube and MySpace, we’re consuming the same content on a different medium. Big media needs some new ideas. Instead, it’s myopically focused on fighting piracy, which may be a losing battle. Read the whole story

However, moving forward isn’t easy. For starters, audiences are smaller and margins are tighter, so heavy investment isn’t worth ityet. Indeed, media companies may be waiting for the next YouTube with a brilliant ad scheme and content that doesn’t compromise intellectual property. With the Web, it is more about rapid expansion and gaining the interest of smaller, more targeted groups of users. Expansion is the operative word, and funding is the implication.

La storia dell’Ikea

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Mac US market growth in Q4 31% vs. 3% PC growth

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

From tuaw.com
I’m listening in on Apple’s Q1 conference call, and one fact really jumped out at me. They were discussing the Mac market growth this quarter and remarked that Mac market growth in the US grew 31% in quarter, compared to PC market growth of 3%. These numbers are amazing, people, and if you consider that Apple hasn’t really announced any exciting Mac related announcements for awhile, they are even more amazing.

I wonder what these numbers will be like when Apple revamps the Mac line, and ships Leopard.

comScore: Google Passes Yahoo in Global Traffic

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

Google has displaced Yahoo as the world’s second most-visited Web site–although not by much–according to November figures comScore Networks. Google’s sites brought in 475.7 million visitors, compared to Yahoo’s 475.3 million. Both trail global leader Microsoft, which attracted a whopping 501.7 million visitors.

Other notable increases included News Corp.’s Fox Interactive Media, whose global traffic surged five-fold to 130.4 million. Web video leader YouTube rose 24-fold to 107.9 million; its traffic was not added to the total for Google, its new parent.

For Google, this was the first time it ever attracted more visitors than Yahoo, capping a year in which the search giant has beaten Yahoo in almost every area where both Web companies compete.

Bloomberg reminds us that this latest achievement for Google reflects its surging popularity outside the United States. Within the U.S., Yahoo, is still the Web traffic leader, according to comScore–although other research firms claim that Fox Interactive Media, led by MySpace.com, has taken that mantle. - Read the whole story…

Web Ad Prices Keep Rising

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

The cost of buying ads on the Internet is going up, and it’s going to continue. The Web has proven to be the cheapest, most effective means of reaching a targeted audience. As such, more advertisers are shifting dollars to the Web, which places the supply of quality Web sites and ad networks at more of a premium.

The question for 2007 is just how much publishers will raise their ad rates. To a certain extent, publishers are wondering that too, especially as they scramble to keep up with their competitors. Joanne Bradford, MSN’s corporate vice president, notes that during the last two years, “There’s been unbelievable price pressure.” Some popular MSN pages have increased as much as 10-fold, she said.

Even the Interactive Advertising Bureau, which is supposed to offer standards and guidelines for things like pricing and ad unit sizes, says there aren’t any reliable statistics on average ad rates, partly because ad agencies often negotiate special rates with publishers, which they keep to themselves.

Right now, it’s all good for the business, as online advertising is expected to reach $16.4 billion this year, according to eMarketer, up 31% from 2005. But if the overall economy slows–as some economists project–and rates keep going up, national advertisers may scale back their budgets, Internet ad growth could slow considerably. Indeed, eMarketer thinks Web growth will slow to 19% this year, reaching $19.5 billion. - Read the whole story…
